This is the capital of Sikkim and situated in the East Sikkim district at an altitude of 5800ft from the sea level. 2. Gurudongmar Lake
Gurudongmar lake is the one of the top 10 highest lakes in India situated at an altitude of 17,800ft and claimed as one of the most beautiful mountain lakes in the world. The entire lake remains frozen during the winter. In general the tourists go to Gurudongmar lake in 2night, 3 days package from Gangtok where they stay first night in Lachen, next day they visit Gurudongmar and returns to Lachen and then goes to Lachung. Next day they visit Yumthang valley and return to Gangtok via Lachung. Local tour operators in Gangtok arrange shared packages for 2N3D North Sikkim where they take 8-10 people in a car. However shared packages for North Sikkim is not recommended for luxury tourist because it is a pure budget option who can not afford exclusive vehicle packages.
How to reach Gurudongmar Lake from Gangtok: Gurudongmar lake is situated in the North Sikkim district of Sikkim and the nearest village / accommodation place is Lachen which is approximately 120km and it takes around 5hrs journey from Gangtok. The permits for Lachen is issued from Gangtok and vehicles leave from North Sikkim Stand / Bajra stand.
3. Yumthang Valley
Yumthang Valley is situated in the North Sikkim district at an altitude of 11,693ft. Yumthang valley sees huge snowfall during the winter to March-April. After that a lot of wild flowers and orchids are seen. This valley is approached from Lachung village where now a days a lot of hotels, home stays are built. Lachung is approximately 118km far from Gangtok and it takes around 5hrs journey. People who visit only Yumthang valley take a 1Night 2Days Yumthang tours package from Gangtok and reaches Lachung on the first night. Next day they visit Yumthang Valley and returns to Gangtok by lunch. After lunch they return from Lachung to Gangtok.
Ravangla is a small village tourist destination situated in South Sikkim at an altitude of 7000ft. Ravangla is approachable from Gangtok by private and shared car (private car is recommended) and this particular village tourist destination became very popular after the beautiful Buddha Park is built. Apart from the Buddha Park the Ralong monastery is also a tourist attraction which you should not miss.
Many of the tourists visit Ravangla enroute Pelling from Gangtok which is also advisable. You can start journey after breakfast and visit Ravangla which will take a 3hrs drive and the 3hrs visiting time. You can reach Pelling in the afternoon and take rest. The next day you can visit Pelling sightseeing.
5. Nathu La – Tsomgo Lake – Baba Mandir
Tsomgo Lake, Baba Mandir & Nathu La is a day trip from Gangtok where you start the journey at around 8.30am in the morning and you return to Gangtok by evening. The permits are issued in two parts as few people go to Tsomgo Lake and Baba Mandir and a few people include Nathu La too. Only Sikkim Govt authorised tour operators in sikkim can get the permits for Nathu La pass. Lets study the destination in more detail.
Tsomgo Lake is a natural glacier lake situated at the altitude 12,313ft and it is around 40km from Gangtok however the height gain is tough since you gain 6000 ft in just a few hours. You can feel some high altitude sickness like headache, breathing trouble which will be normal after you come down to Gangtok. The lake remains frozen during January and February and rest of the year it is pretty nice lake at this height.
Baba Mandir is a temple built dediated to Indian Army Jawan Baba Harbhajan Singh who fought till death during the Indo-China war in 1962 and he defeated the Chinese battalion with his bloodshed. However even after his death the myth is he still serves to the country and his paranormal presence is felt.
Nathu La is the India and China’s Autonomous Tibet’s border at an altitude of 14,140 ft.
